WEST SIDE. Betty's Blue Star gets more lively as the night wears on, and here it can wear on and on thanks to a 5am liquor license! The party really starts on Friday and Saturday nights, when you'll find drink specials and downtempo filling the house. Each night features a music specialty and noted DJs. LINCOLN PARK. A svelte see-and-be-seen crowd gathers at this popular and ever-so-stylish lounge. Indeed, Blu caters to the good looking yuppie set. The interior is edged with stainless steel and evokes a '70's feel, inviting guests to mingle and make their presence known on the dance floor. LAKE VIEW. With its Prairie-style decor, flickering candles, fireplaces, and low-key servers, Bungalow issues a decidedly mellow vibe. No dress code and reasonable prices attract a diverse neighborhood crowd to an off-the-beaten-path location. The specialty cocktail is a Bungalow Blonde, a mix of Ketel One Citroen Vodka, Limoncello, and sweet-and-sour mix served in a glass with a sugared rim. A smooth soundtrack accompanies conversation before a DJ starts spinning.

THE LOOP. Located in the Monadnock Building, this bar and restaurant offers business types a place to hang their hats during lunch or after work. The entrance is tucked away in a rather nondescript alley, with the only clue to its existence being a green and white striped awning. Green leather and warm wood tones greet guests upon arrival. The menu includes a mix of sandwiches, pastas, salads, and burgers as well as a laundry list of beers.

ROGERS PARK. Charmers is primarily a gay bar, but it is welcoming to everyone who comes through the doors. This neighborhood hangout has been around since 1929, and the interior features a "jewel box" bar and leather walls. Busts of ancient Greek mythological figures dot the room. Nightly specials are worth paying attention to ­ from $5 pitchers to $2.50 bloody marys. A jukebox keeps things lively, and pinball games are available. Smart casual dress.
